A Brief History of Clark & Addison

Chic Clark and Ago (Agostino) Addison were friends and neighbors from Ashdale Junction just outside of Mt. Carroll, Illinois. The two met in school and were, what some might call, tinkerers. They loved to take things apart as well as create and solve puzzles. Their love of puzzles and baseball led them to create one of the earliest versions of a tabletop baseball game. Their first production game was called, The American Game. Being from a small town in the Midwest they needed a market to sell their new game. For them, there was no other market than Chicago. So the two packed their bags—with a copy of their game, their hopes, and their dreams of success—and got on the train bound for the City of the Big Shoulders.

Once they landed in Chicago they began to tell as many people as they could about their new game, even setting up outside the train station downtown to try and spark interest in purchases or investment. A middle-aged gentleman was interested in what the young men had to offer and played a game with the two entrepreneurs. A lifelong baseball fan, the gentleman knew they had something; he also knew they were in the wrong place to sell it. He told them they would find their customers at the corner of Clark and Addison Street. Intrigued by the name of the street corner the two men listened to the wise advice from the stranger and made their way up to the north side of Chicago. When they arrived at the Addison Street stop on the train they couldn’t believe what they saw. Rising high above the streets and homes in the neighborhood—at the intersection of Clark and Addison —was Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.

The two men knew that the Fates were shining down on them and Clark and Addison began to sell their game at the corner that seemed destined for them to make their fortune. Drawing pre- and post-game crowds they began taking orders for their game and even secured a deal from a wealthy local businessman who offered to print the game for them and get it into several shops in the city.

Just a few years after the company finally established momentum and sales The Great Depression set in and killed the market. It would be years before dice baseball games would come back into fashion among baseball fans. Unfortunately, both Clark and Addison died before they could revive their game and take advantage of this new Golden Age of tabletop baseball games.
